Arresting Colonial convict T-shirts

Tasmania was once called Van Diemen’s Land. Remote and rugged, it became a brutal penal colony, in which more than 120,000 convicts from Ireland, Britain and even (illegally) America and Canada (see our American Patriots poster) suffered under an often sadistic regime.

Some of those men and women were criminals. Many were transported, never to return home, after being found guilty of trivial offences like stealing boots or bread for their starving families.

Hundreds of those convicts were political prisoners – heroes who revolted against harsh British rule over Ireland and Canada.

The name Van Diemen’s Land spread fear and horror throughout Ireland in the 1800s. A few, like American John Burwell Tyrell and Canadian Samuel Chandler, Irish rebel John Mitchell and Young Irelander William Smith O’Brien, returned home to tell their dramatic tales.

The British Government marked its property with the Broad Arrow.

Convict uniforms bore the Broad Arrow, branding the wearer as Government property.
